The United Kingdom is not in the Schengen area. Even if you hold a European visa, you need a separate one for the UK. The visa used for short business visits is the Standard Visitor visa. It covers meetings, trade fairs, contract negotiations, training and short site visits, and it does not turn into a work permit. The guide is written for applicants resident in Türkiye.

What the Standard Visitor visa covers

Permitted business activities include attending meetings and talks, visiting trade fairs and conferences, negotiating and signing contracts, buying goods or services from a UK company and short training. You cannot actually work for a UK employer, provide paid services or run long projects on this visa. Those cases need other visa categories.

A standard visa allows stays of up to 6 months per entry. For frequent travellers there are 2, 5 and 10-year long-term visitor visas, which keep the same 6-month limit per visit.

Application process

Unlike Schengen, the UK application starts entirely online.

  1. Online form. You create an account on gov.uk and fill in the form in English. It asks detailed questions about travel history, income, employer and trips in the last 10 years. The answers must match the documents.
  2. Fee payment. The visa fee is paid online. Long-term visas cost more by duration, and extra services such as priority processing are charged separately.
  3. Biometrics appointment. Appointments are booked at application centres in Türkiye, where fingerprints and a photo are taken. In busy periods a slot can take a few weeks.
  4. Uploading or submitting documents. Supporting documents are mostly uploaded online. With some service packages they are scanned at the centre.
  5. Decision. Standard processing is often announced as about 3 weeks and can take longer depending on the season and the file. The passport is collected after the decision.

Recommended document set

There is no mandatory list, but these are the documents we submit in corporate applications.

Purpose of travel

  • An invitation letter from the UK company: dates, purpose, who covers the costs
  • Fair or conference registration
  • An assignment letter from the company in Türkiye: title, start date, travel dates, confirmation of return to work

The applicant's circumstances

  • Payslips and social security service record
  • Personal bank statement (the last 6 months is preferred)
  • Property deeds, vehicle registration or documents showing family ties, if available
  • Old passports and previous visas

Company documents

  • Tax certificate, activity certificate, trade registry gazette
  • Signature circular
  • Company bank statement

Travel plan

  • Flight and hotel reservations (do not buy non-refundable tickets before the visa is issued)
  • A travel programme: which day, where and whom you will meet

Common mistakes

  • Inconsistencies in the form. The form is long and in English. Income, travel history and dates must match the documents exactly. Many refusals come from differences between the form and the documents.
  • Incomplete travel history. Trips in the last 10 years are asked. Forgetting visas in an old passport can be treated as a false statement.
  • A short account history. Money deposited just before applying does not count as proof of regular income.
  • A weak invitation letter. Without a dated, signed letter on the UK company's letterhead stating the purpose, the business purpose is not considered credible.

Corporate tips

  • For employees with more than one UK trip a year, a 2-year visa is usually cheaper overall.
  • Keep the assignment letter and company documents as templates so only the person and dates change per application.
  • In fair season, especially spring and autumn, biometrics slots fill early. Start the application at least 6-8 weeks before travel.

Most UK refusals we see start with the long English form. We fill it in with you, check each answer against the documents and book the biometrics appointment. See our Visa Services page for details. If the same trip continues to Europe, our Trade Fair Travel Planning Guide helps you set the calendar.
