Many of the world's largest fairgrounds are in Germany, and most trade fair trips by Turkish companies concentrate on five cities: Hannover, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Munich. What they share is that hotel prices multiply in fair weeks and central hotels sell out months in advance.

Hannover

Fairground: Messe Hannover, south of the city centre, one of the largest fairgrounds in Europe. Hannover Messe (industry) and other major fairs are held here.

Transport: 20-25 minutes from the centre by tram and S-Bahn, with extra services during fairs. Hannover has its own airport, and connections via Frankfurt or Amsterdam are common.

Accommodation: Hannover is a relatively small city. During major fairs it fills completely and prices rise several times. Two options: book early in central hotels around the Hauptbahnhof, or stay in nearby cities such as Hildesheim or Braunschweig and come in by train. For some teams private rentals and guesthouses are also reasonable.

Timing: For major fairs, securing a hotel block 6 months ahead is not excessive.

Frankfurt

Fairground: Messe Frankfurt is next to the city centre and hosts many major fairs such as Automechanika, Ambiente, ISH and the Buchmesse.

Transport: 5-10 minutes from the centre by S-Bahn and tram. Frankfurt Airport is Germany's main hub with many direct flights from Istanbul, and 15-20 minutes to the fair by S-Bahn.

Accommodation: Central prices rise sharply in fair weeks. The Bahnhofsviertel is ideal for access but not always the team's preference in the evening. Westend, Sachsenhausen and Bockenheim are quieter alternatives. Hotels in Offenbach and around the airport are linked by S-Bahn and cheaper.

Note: Frankfurt's fair calendar is very busy and several events can overlap in the same week. Start looking for a hotel as soon as the fair date is fixed.

Düsseldorf

Fairground: Messe Düsseldorf, north of the city near the airport. The largest fairs in their sectors are held here, such as Medica, interpack, K, drupa and boot.

Transport: 15-20 minutes by U-Bahn from the centre (Altstadt or Hauptbahnhof) and a very short taxi ride from the airport. There are direct flights from Istanbul to Düsseldorf.

Accommodation: During giant fairs such as Medica, Düsseldorf is fully booked. Neighbouring Neuss, Duisburg, Essen and Cologne are 20-40 minutes away by regional train and save a lot in fair periods. For large teams, staying in Cologne and commuting by train is a common solution.

Cologne

Fairground: Koelnmesse, on the east bank of the Rhine, linked to the centre by bridge. Fairs such as Anuga, ISM, gamescom and IDS are held here.

Transport: A few minutes by S-Bahn from Köln Hauptbahnhof. Köln Messe/Deutz station is right at the fair entrance. The nearest airport is Cologne/Bonn, and Düsseldorf Airport is 40-50 minutes away.

Accommodation: The Deutz side is within walking distance but has few hotels. The Altstadt and Neustadt are central and well connected. During big fairs such as Anuga, Bonn and Leverkusen are alternatives.

Munich

Fairground: Messe München, in Riem in the east of the city. Fairs such as bauma, analytica, electronica and EXPO REAL are held here.

Transport: 20-25 minutes from the centre on the U2 to Messestadt. Munich Airport is north of the city, about an hour from the fair with an S-Bahn and U-Bahn change, and there are direct flights from Istanbul.

Accommodation: Munich is one of Germany's most expensive hotel cities, and prices climb further during fair weeks and Oktoberfest. Always check whether the fair overlaps with Oktoberfest. Riem and Trudering are close to the fair, the centre (Altstadt, Maxvorstadt) is well connected but expensive, and the area around Ostbahnhof is a balanced choice.

Shared tips for all five cities

  • Hotel first, then flights. There is almost always a flight option, but in fair weeks there is no reasonable hotel left.
  • Hotels tighten cancellation terms during fairs. Get the refundable rate in writing.
  • For teams over 8-10 people, a block booking with a name list you can update later makes life much easier.
  • In cities where the fair ticket includes transport, tell the team. Taxi costs and time lost both fall.
  • Germany is a Schengen country. A business visa file includes the fair registration and hotel booking. Mind the main destination rule.
