Cappadocia in central Anatolia is a region of volcanic valleys, rock-cut churches, underground cities and, at sunrise, dozens of hot air balloons over the fairy chimneys. A private programme pays off here, because the best moments happen early in the morning and at sunset, away from the busiest tour hours. This is how we plan private trips for our guests.

Getting there

Two airports serve the region: Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV), about 40 minutes from Göreme, and Kayseri (ASR), about 1 hour away. Flights from Istanbul take around 1 hour 15 minutes, with more frequent connections to Kayseri. Many guests combine Cappadocia with Istanbul, flying in and out on the same day as their Istanbul stay ends.

How many days

  • 2 nights: The minimum, enough for one balloon attempt and the main valleys.
  • 3 nights: What we recommend. It gives a second morning if the first balloon flight is cancelled for weather, and a slower pace.
  • 4 nights or more: For walkers, photographers and those who want to include Soğanlı or the Ihlara Valley.

The balloon flight

Flights take off around sunrise and depend entirely on the wind. Flights are cancelled on some days, especially in winter and spring, so book the balloon for your first morning and keep the second morning free as a backup. Choose operators with good safety records and clear information about basket size. We book with licensed operators and move the booking if a flight is cancelled.

Where to stay

  • Göreme: The centre of the balloon area, with many cave hotels and restaurants. Lively and convenient.
  • Uçhisar: Quieter, higher up, with wide views over the valleys. Popular for boutique cave hotels.
  • Ürgüp: A small town with a local feel, good restaurants and larger hotels.

Cave rooms are cool in summer and cosy in winter. Ask about stairs and terraces if anyone in the group has limited mobility, as many cave hotels are built on slopes.

A three-day plan

DayMorningAfternoon and evening
1Arrival and transferGöreme Open-Air Museum, sunset at a viewpoint
2Balloon flight at sunriseAn underground city (Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı), pottery in Avanos
3Backup balloon morning or a valley walk (Rose or Love Valley)Uçhisar Castle, departure

When to go

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) bring mild weather and the best walking conditions. Summer is warm and busy. Winter turns the valleys white and is quieter, but balloon flights are cancelled more often and some days are very cold.
